A trail guide who devotes himself to protecting former slaves seeking to homestead in the west is confronted by a con-man in preacher's garb. Buck (Sidney Poitier) is an ex-Union Army cavalry sergeant. "Duel at Diablo," directed by Ralph Nelson in 1966, was Poitier's first. But the two finally join forces against bounty hunters hired to drive the homesteaders back into the south where they can be exploited as cheap labor. Along with Buck’s wife, Ruth (Ruby Dee), who works tirelessly and devotedly alongside her beloved husband, their party includes the Preacher (Harry Belafonte), a greedy con man, formerly enslaved by a white minister, who loves money much more than he loves God. His effort here is commendable, but the script, written by Ernest Kinoy (the TV miniseries Roots) from a story by Kinoy and Drake Walker, ineffectively blends the two elements.Namely, the action is missing.
